All I know for certain is that he was the only bird that sat on the bottom of the cage with Little One, and bothered her and pushed her until she got up, got back on the perch, and sat near the food dish. He couldn't make her eat, of course, but seems to me he knew something wasn't right.
Birds that are stressed or upset sometimes will "feather pick", which means what it sounds like, and sometimes will stop eating. Pepper is singing songs, dancing a little, and happily interacting with the other birds.

Do you think he was aware she was dying? I mean of course on some level he was, but I just wonder how birds grieve when their mates die...
