High School Math now requires $130.00 space-age calculators.
Fortunately our school supplied them this year, and Doc brought hers home today.

That is outrageous! What in the world do you do if you can't afford it and the school doesn't provide them? I know for our family, we try to spend less then that on all school clothes for BOTH of the girls every year. Thrift stores are my friend.

We were just talking about the fact that our district HAD to provide them because we live in a rural, low income area where most kids couldn't afford them. We had to sign a paper saying that we'd take care of it and return it in good condition or we'd have to pay $130.00 for it. Ouch! Knowing my kid, she'll lose or break it!

When we were doing our back to school shopping we saw calculators like these under lock and key at Wal-Mart and Target...selling for almost 150 bucks...and people were buying them, because most districts DON'T supply them. If your kid is taking any sort of algebra, geometry, or calculus they have to have one.

Back when I rode my dinosaur to school, we had to chisel on stone tablets! In college, I took an astronomy course and had to pay $50 for the simplest of calculators that companies now give away for free! Let's hope your daughter does become that rocket scientist a calculator like this one should inspire!

That's insane! My school required us to have calculators with those functions, but it didn't have to be a particular _brand_ of calculator. We couldn't afford the fancy new ones either...I used this ancient one of my dad's, which weighed almost a pound, and the display was in red lights.

I bought my daughter an $80 calculator for pre-cal, only to be told the teacher doesn't know how to use that brand. Of course, the kind she wants them to use was $120/
