It's a peony. YOu can pluge it upside down into cold water to float/flush the ants out. They're also known as memorial day flowers (or something similar). They bloom around memorial day around here and you'll often see bushes planted alongside headstones in the older cemetaries.
CC - I've heard it said one of two ways and as far as I know both are more or less correct. What I've heard: pee-OH-nee, and PEE-oh-nee. Personally, I pronounce it PEE-oh-nee. *shrug*

How do you pronounce "peony"?? It is the state flower of Indiana, and I've heard it pronounced about three different ways.

The ants are important though - They eat the waxy coating off the bud so it can bloom, with no ants, no blooming....
